Research Study – An Opportunity for Clients & Caregivers to Participate in a Study on Mental Health Acute Care Discharge Experiences

Researchers would like to hear from folks who meet the following criteria: 

Client Participants 
Client participants will include adults aged 18 years or older who reside in British Columbia and are living with a severe and persistent mental illness that has been diagnosed for at least one year. Eligible participants must have a history of hospitalization related to their severe and persistent mental illness within the previous 24 months, have the capacity to provide informed consent, and be able to communicate and participate in a group discussion in English. Participants must also be able to participate in a 90-minute virtual Nominal Group Technique (NGT) session. Individuals under 18 years of age, those currently experiencing acute psychiatric symptoms that would impair their ability to participate meaningfully in a group discussion, those unable to communicate in English, or those who lack the capacity to provide informed consent will be excluded.

Informal Caregiver Participants
Informal caregiver participants will include adults aged 18 years or older who reside in British Columbia and identify as a family member, friend, or other significant person who has provided regular, unpaid care or support to an individual living with a severe and persistent mental illness who was discharged from hospital within the previous 24 months. Eligible caregivers must have been involved in the discharge process and be able to reflect on their experiences with discharge planning. Participants must be able to communicate in English, provide informed consent, and participate in a 90-minute virtual Nominal Group Technique (NGT) session. Caregivers who are under 18 years of age, have not been involved in the discharge process, are unable to communicate in English, or lack the capacity to provide informed consent will be excluded.

The commitment is 1 group panel participation, and 1 follow up email. There is an honorarium available.  This study was approved by the UofCalgary REB board REB25-1799.
