Job Posting: Recreation Program Leader (Peer Support Worker)

Organization: Richmond Mental Health Consumer and Friends Society (RCFC)
Location: In-person at various sites in the Richmond, BC community.
Position: Part-time; hours vary from 4 to 10 hours weekly based on programming and scheduling needs, Monday to Friday.
Wage: $23 per hour.

The Richmond Mental Health Consumer and Friends Society (RCFC) is a self-governing, peer-run mental health organization. We provide peer support and a full calendar of wellness, social and recreational activities to adult mental health consumers living in Richmond, B.C.


Position Overview – Recreation Program Leader (Peer Support Worker)
The Recreation Program Leader reports directly to the Peer Support and Recreation Program Manager or
the RCFC Executive Director in their absence. The Recreation Program Leader implements and safely
supervises group activities that support recovery, social connection, and inclusion through recreation. The role promotes meaningful engagement in leisure and community life for program participants.


Key Responsibilities

  • Implement safe, effective, and inclusive recreation activities that reflect the RCFC Recreatio Program’s purpose and philosophy.
  • Encourage participants to develop independence, confidence, and engagement in community life.
  • Supervise scheduled outings and activities as outlined in the monthly calendar, ensuring participant safety and adherence to all RCFC protocols.
  • Support the planning process by helping identify individual interests and needs for consumerchoice activities.
  • Assist in hosting and organizing special events and community outings.
  • Promote RCFC’s Recreation Program to other agencies, professionals, and community members.
  • Use sound judgment, professionalism, and compassion in all aspects of the role.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Peer Support and Recreation Program Manager or Executive Director.


Qualifications

  • Education & Experience:
    • A high school degree or equivalent is necessary.
    • Experience delivering programs to people with mental health conditions, or similar relevant work experience.
  • Skills and Knowledge:
    • Demonstrated knowledge of wellness models and therapeutic recreation.
    • Able to act as a role model to people recovering from a severe mental illness, have a preventative self-care model in place, and have effective strategies for dealing with stress.
    • The Recreation Leader must be willing to work with a diverse population and be empathetic, patient, and supportive.
    • Present professionally.
    • Have a firm understanding of interpersonal skills such as conflict resolution, dealing with challenging behaviours, diplomacy, and teamwork.
  • Assets:
    • Experience leading arts and crafts, journaling, and other wellness or therapeutic recreation activities.
    • Experience using personal experience and empathy to inspire participation and to support individual wellness journeys.
  • Certifications & Requirements:
    • Completion of a recognized peer support training program and accompanying certificate.
    • This must be renewed every five years.
    • Current First Aid and CPR certification.
    • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check for working with vulnerable populations.
