Shinrin-Yoku:
A Practice for Healing

A project proposed, developed and run by a peer community member, funded by the Consumer Initiative Fund

CIF Project Summary

Shinrin-Yoku: A Practice for Healing

Shinrin-yoku is a Japanese practice that means “forest bathing.” It is a proven scientific method to enhance health and wellness. This “call to being” is a mindful practice that strengthens personal connections with nature.

Throughout project activities we aim to:

  • Create a supportive space of healing
  • Reduce stress and improve mood
  • Build stronger, positive relationships within the community

Shinrin-yoku is a valuable practice for anyone who wishes to explore nature as part of their healing. People from all backgrounds, including peer workers, can enjoy this peaceful time together.

Guided activities will take place at Bloedel Conservatory followed by a tea ceremony in Queen Elizabeth Park (admission fees and refreshments are included).

Monthly sessions will run from September 2025 through February 2026. Depending on weather, there may be an outdoor portion.

Shinrin-Yoku: A Practice for Healing is a community project led by Ehren Gruber, who is a peer and a certified forest therapy guide with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT). He has also received training on Indigenous Tools for Living (ITFL). Ehren has personally felt how his relationship with nature restored balance in his own life. Ehren is joined by Nicole Yamanaka, who is a peer and certified forest therapy guide with ANFT. With a degree in Kinesiology, she has over 25 years of experience in the field of health and wellness. Together, they want to make it easier for others to enjoy the benefits of nature right in their own community.
