Job Posting: Voices & Visions Support Group Peer Facilitator

Duration of Placement: 6 month contract with potential to renew

Pay and Hours: $21.00 per hour, up to 10 hours per month

Location of Work: In-person at various sites in the Vancouver community and Virtual (delivered via Zoom) from home

The Vancouver Voices & Visions Support Groups are peer-led support groups based on the International Hearing Voices Network. Their aim is to be a place where people who hear voices, see visions, or have other unusual/unique sensory experiences can give and receive support, share techniques for living well with their experiences and/or explore the meaning those experiences have for them. The groups are facilitated by peers who support the smooth functioning of the group and make relevant resources available to participants.

We are looking for a peer facilitator to co-facilitate/backup facilitate the following groups:

  • 1st Friday of each month on Zoom
  • 2nd Monday of each month at South Mental Health Team (#200 – 1200 W 73rd Ave, Vancouver, BC V6P 6G5)
  • 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month on Zoom
  • 3rd Friday of each month at Three Bridges Community Health Centre (1128 Hornby St, Vancouver, BC V6Z 2L4)

Duties include:

  • Co-facilitate Voices & Visions Support Group meetings
  • Draw on Hearing Voices Network resource materials in discussions and make these and other resources available to participants
  • Work collaboratively with other Peer Facilitators
  • Create and maintain a safe(r) and more respectful group environment guided by how participants define safety and respect
  • Set-up and take-down of room (may involve moving tables and chairs)
  • Ensure everyone has a chance to express their ideas and feelings
  • Share personal experience appropriately for the benefit of the participants
  • Be open to a range of ways of understanding experiences
  • Attend quarterly team meetings, communicate with site staff, promote the support groups, and complete paperwork as required

Skills and Abilities:

  • Have lived/living experience of hearing voices, seeing visions, or having other unusual/unique sensory experiences
  • Have completed a group facilitation training or willingness to complete one
  • Have prior experience with group facilitation (considered an asset)
  • Have completed a Peer Support Training Program and/or equivalent education and experience (considered an asset)
  • Have excellent listening and communication skills
  • Have demonstrated experience using recovery oriented and trauma informed practices
  • Have the ability to attend sessions consistently and be highly reliable to commitments
  • Be able to effectively use a computer, phone, email, and Zoom
  • Have a successful completion of a Criminal Record Check (organized by VCH)
  • Be able to role model recovery by sharing common life experiences and practical information
  • Have effective strategies for dealing with stress
  • Be able to work with a culturally diverse population
  • Be willing to respect other people’s right to decline assistance
  • Be able to present in a professional manner
  • Be empathetic, patient, and supportive
